John Margolies was an American photographer and architectural critic who dedicated his life to capturing the essence of roadside architecture in the United States. He was born in New York City in 1940 and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a degree in architectural history.
In the 1970s, Margolies began traveling the country, documenting the architecture of roadside attractions, motels, and diners. He took thousands of photographs, many of which were published in his book "Roadside America," which became a cult classic.
Margolies was a pioneer in the preservation of roadside architecture, recognizing the importance of these structures as cultural and historical artifacts. His photographs captured the unique and kitschy designs of these buildings, which often reflected the spirit of their times.
Throughout his career, Margolies worked as a photographer for various publications, including The New York Times, and was awarded numerous grants and fellowships for his work. He also served as a curator and lecturer, sharing his passion for roadside architecture with others.
Margolies passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of preserving the history and culture of American roadside architecture through his photographs.
